Brian Magovern, MD
Shoulder & Upper Extremity Specialist
Board Certified & Fellowship Trained
Chief, Elbow & Shoulder Surgery
Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
Dr. Magovern was completing his internship in surgery at UC San Francisco when he first realized that this very specialized field—which often involves puzzle-like reconstructing of several broken bone pieces—was exactly what he wanted to do, and that he was excellent at it. He followed his internship with a residency at Loyola University Chicago, then a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
Since 2008, his position as the Chief of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center has given him thousands of opportunities to put his education, skills and intensive training to use. Dr. Magovern is especially attentive to his patients’ needs before and after treatment. He is highly skilled in surgical and non-surgical procedures and recommends surgery only when necessary. To him, each patient is an individual who requires a unique treatment plan. During this process he carefully designs the right program for each one, checks in with them often, and is happy to return phone calls as well.
Dr. Magovern is known in particular throughout the South Bay and Los Angeles area for performing these and other complicated procedures: shoulder replacement, elbow replacement, complex humeral/scapular fracture care, complex elbow trauma care, and complex elbow instability repair. He is adept in the operating room, and his patients have positive outcomes as a result. He stays current with the latest medical advances and imparts this knowledge by regularly giving lectures and teaching medical students at Harbor-UCLA.
Although Dr. Magovern was born on the East Coast and received his Doctorate of Medicine from Georgetown University, where he met his wife, the two of them were drawn to the South Bay’s sense of community, small-town feel, and amazing weather, so they decided to pursue their careers and raise their family here. They enjoy skiing together as a family, and to stay in shape at sea level, Dr. Magovern saves some energy for swimming workouts several times a week.
In 2012 he joined Coastal Ortho Advanced Orthopedics because he was excited to be able to treat his patients in modern, state-of-the-art facilities that house a high-speed open MRI machine and a full physical, hand, and aquatic therapy department. He also wanted to be part of what he calls the finest team of orthopedic doctors in the area, with reputations as skilled doctors and an unwavering commitment to pursuing the health of their patients.
I really respect what patients and their families are going through when they have a serious trauma injury. They’re scared and hurting. I feel good when I can give them answers and options right away.
